Berenice Bejo wins best actress at Cannes

Berenice Bejo wins best actress at Cannes

French actress Berenice Bejo on Sunday fought back emotion as she won best actress at the Cannes Film Festival for her turn in Iranian director Asghar Farhadi's film "The Past" for which she turned down Hollywood parts.

Bejo, 36, who was catapulted to international stardom with the hit French silent movie "The Artist", plays a wife who asks her estranged husband to return from Iran to finalize their divorce.

After the ceremony, the actress said she was touched by the award but felt uncomfortable at the idea of taking credit for Oscar winner Farhadi's Paris-set family drama.

"It is special to get a best performance prize; it is for me and I cannot imagine getting something just for me.

"I would be nothing if there weren't other actors, the director photography, and all the members of the crew," she told reporters.

"It is as if the film is being reduced just to me and I can't envision that," she added, speaking in French.

The actress who was born in Argentina and speaks fluent Spanish as well as English -- is married to Michel Hazanavicius, director of "The Artist" which swept the 2012 Oscars with five awards including Best Picture.

Speaking earlier in the festival, she said she received offers from Hollywood on the back of the success of "The Artist".

But she said the chance to keep working in Paris with "one of the world's best directors" was more tempting.

She said the shifting perceptions in Farhadi's films, where things are never quite what they seem, had drawn her to the character of Marie.

"For an actress it was quite an extraordinary experience things appear true and then turn out to be completely different," she said.

'Fast 6' speeds past 'Hangover' to top box office

'Fast 6' speeds past 'Hangover' to top box office

After a lackluster start to the year, the movie industry enjoyed its most robust Memorial Day weekend ever at the box office, with "Fast & Furious 6" speeding to the top spot.

The record-breaking four-day weekend generated estimated receipts of $316 million.

"Over $300 million for Memorial Day weekend has never happened before," said box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Hollywood.com. "This proves that when you have a great selection of films, audiences will line up at movie theaters in record numbers."

The sixth installment of the "Fast & Furious" franchise debuted at No. 1 with $120 million, making it the biggest opening weekend for a Universal Pictures release, according to Hollywood.com.

Starring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, the muscle-car action romp took in an additional $158 million internationally.

Fans turned out because filmmakers upped the ante, said Nikki Rocco, Universal's head of distribution.

"The creative team, the filmmakers and the studio put their heart and soul into making it bigger and better," she said. "When you have this many films in the franchise ... you have to take it in a new direction."

The street racers battle both a tank and a plane in the film.

"It is the very definition of the summer popcorn movie," Dergarabedian said. "You suspend disbelief, buckle up and go along for that ride."

"The Hangover Part III," starring Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms, opened in second place. The final chapter in the Warner Bros. raunchy comedy trilogy collected $51.2 million.

Paramount Pictures' "Star Trek: Into Darkness," which opened last week, added $47 million to its domestic ticket sales, landing at No. 3.

Fox' animated "Epic," the only non-sequel among the weekend's five top-grossing films, opened in the fourth spot with $42.6 million.

"We did see a hole in the release schedule that said this is the perfect time to launch an animated film," said Fox president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson. "It can be challenging to launch an original-content movie in such a competitive weekend, but this is a very special movie: A family movie as well as an all-audience movie."

Now in its fourth week of release, "Iron Man 3" — which had the biggest opening so far this year — hung onto fifth place with $24.4 million.

The record-breaking weekend take bodes well for the summer movie season, Dergarabedian said: "This Memorial weekend is exactly what the industry needed and this momentum will carry forward."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Monday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Tuesday.

1. "Fast & Furious 6," $120 million ($158 million international).

2. "The Hangover Part III," $51.2 million ($19.2 million international).

3. "Star Trek: Into Darkness," $47 million ($13.1 million international).

4. "Epic," $42.6 million ($23.1 million international).

5. "Iron Man 3," $24.4 million ($17.4 million international).

6. "The Great Gatsby," $17 million ($24.4 million international).

7. "Mud," $2.5 million ($400,000 international).

8. "The Croods," $1.6 million ($5.8 million international).

9. "42," $1.6 million.

10. "Oblivion," $1.1 million ($2.3 million international).

Estimated weekend ticket sales at international theaters (excluding the U.S. and Canada) through Sunday for films distributed overseas by Hollywood studios, according to Rentrak:

1. "Fast & Furious 6," $158 million.

2. "The Great Gatsby," $24.4 million.

3. "Epic," $23.1 million.

4. "The Hangover Part III," $19.2 million.

5. "Iron Man 3," $17.4 million.

6. "Star Trek: Into Darkness," $13.1 million.

7. "The Croods," $5.8 million.

8. "Oblivion," $2.3 million.

9. "Evil Dead," $2.2 million.

10. "Only God Forgives," $1.5 million.

Justin Bieber investigated for reckless driving

Justin Bieber investigated for reckless driving

Los Angeles County Sheriff's detectives are investigating Justin Bieber for reckless driving after witnesses — including former NFL star Keyshawn Johnson — complained about the pop-star's alleged freeway speeds in their gated community in north Los Angeles County.

At about 8 p.m. Monday, Bieber allegedly drove his white Ferrari at freeway speeds in what is a 25 mph zone, Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

Johnson was outside with his 3-year-old daughter who was preparing to get into a small electric car when Bieber zoomed by. Johnson was upset and got into his Prius, following Bieber to his nearby home. As the garage door was closing, Johnson put out his arm and stopped it, telling Bieber he wanted to talk about his reckless driving.

Whitmore said Bieber scurried into his home without speaking.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department received two calls and responded to the location. When they tried to talk to Bieber, however, they were also turned away.

"His security detail said he declined to talk to us based on the advice of counsel," Whitmore said.

Deputies interviewed two witnesses, including Johnson, and wrote up their report. They handed that off to detectives who are continuing to investigate the incident.

"Their eyewitness testimony to our deputies was definitive — not only the speed, not only the vehicle, but Mr. Bieber was sitting and driving in the driver's side seat," Whitmore said.

Deputies plan to send a reckless driving report to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office to consider filing misdemeanor charges in the next week or two.

Bieber's publicist did not immediately return a call for comment. Johnson declined to comment via ESPN, where he now works as a TV commentator.

Prosecutors are also looking at whether to charge Bieber for battery in a separate incident involving a neighbor, who complained the pop-star attacked and threatened him.

"We take this very seriously and if this actually did occur, which it appears that it did, it is unacceptable behavior from anybody, anywhere, anytime," Whitmore said.

The East: A satisfying eco-suspense all set to go north

The East: A satisfying eco-suspense all set to go north

A social-conscience espionage film that has actually thought about its "eco-terrorism" themes beyond figuring out how to mine them for suspense, "The East" sends a straight-laced overachiever undercover with a violent eco-vigilante group. Zal Batmanglij and cowriter/star Brit Marling deliver a consistently tense, morally alert story that has plenty of box-office appeal.

Marling plays Sarah, a former FBI agent now seeking her fortune in the private sector. Her first assignment for Hiller/Brood, a secretive company providing undercover risk assessments for multinational corporations, requires her to infiltrate a new anarchist group, The East, which has targeted polluters in a series of let-the-punishment-fit-the-crime "jams."

Telling her patient boyfriend (Jason Ritter) she's off to Dubai for business, Sarah actually hits the streets not far from her Washington, D.C. home — getting grubby with freegans and hobos while watching for someone whose political rants sound likely to produce action. After an enjoyable bit of improvised role-playing, she winds up at the burned-up mansion The East calls home.

The group looks a bit like a cult, especially given the shaggy, Jesus-like appearance of head strategist Benji (Alexander Skarsgard), but is more of a democracy than it seems. Members like Doc (Toby Kebbell) and Izzy (Ellen Page) offer villains from their own pasts — a reckless drug manufacturer, say, whose wares injured loved ones — and together they decide how to get close enough to do that company well-publicized harm.

The tidy paybacks will appeal to many viewers: Who hasn't thought execs who knowingly pollute waterways should have to bathe in their own slurry? But putting a secret agent in the middle of their execution allows us to live the fantasy and question its justice simultaneously. Sarah will inevitably be changed by this group. But will it be in the expected, manageable way — as her shark-like boss (Patricia Clarkson) warns, some sympathy is inevitable when you devote every waking moment to earning someone's trust — or will she go rogue?

The actors bringing this band of anarchists to life project enough wounded, uncertain self-righteousness to distance them from the generic zealots more often seen in this kind of tale, and Marling, working behind a couple of layers of role-playing, keeps audiences guessing about what Sarah actually believes. Batmanglij balances emotional tension with practical danger nicely, a must in a story whose activist protagonists can make no distinction between the personal and the political.

"The East," a Fox Searchlight release, is rated PG-13 for thematic elements, violence, some disturbing images, sexual content and partial nudity. Running time: 116 minutes.

Angelina Jolie Red Carpet Return Is Kind Of Boring

Angelina Jolie Red Carpet Return Is Kind Of Boring (PHOTOS)

While everyone buzzed about Jennifer Lopez's decidedly Angelina Jolie-like exposed leg at the Grammys last night, the originator of the style was just across town making her own major red carpet debut. That's right, folks, Angie's back on the style scene for the first time this year!

But the actress didn't quite return to the red carpet with a bang -- it was more of a thud, actually. To attend the American Society of Cinematographers annual awards shindig, Angelina opted for a gray Atelier Versace sheath, nude pumps and -- the icing on the boring cake -- a ponytail. Our reaction? Zzzzzzz.

It's not like we expected the mother of six to pull out all of the stops for the relatively minor appearance, but she really didn't give us much to work with here. Plus, she arrived without her two red carpet staples: Brad Pitt and an exposed right leg.

Fine, Angelina, be all withholding. But next time, we'd appreciate some Hollywood waves or something. What do you think of her debut look?

Mariah Carey suffered a profanity-peppered wardrobe malfunction on "Good Morning America" Friday, after the singer's dress burst open on live TV.
"Oh shoot, the back of my dress just popped!" said Carey as she was talking to "GMA" anchor Lara Spencer on a stage in Central Park.
The "American Idol" judge, who had teetered onto the stage awkwardly moments earlier, sang her first song as part of the show's summer concert series and then began to chat with Spencer when her dress betrayed her.

Mariah Carey showed her wardrobe malfunction to the audience at GMA's Summer Concert Series.

Carey twirled around to show that the back of her sparkly, body-hugging gown opened halfway down her back.
"It popped, darling," said Carey. "What should we call this? The Central Park saga?"
Spencer cooly responded: "I dare say this is a TV moment."

Host Lara Spencer helped cover Carey by holding her notes in front of the singer's chest.

The show cut to commercial and when it returned, Carey's dress had been fixed.
A few minutes later, she changed into a pink dress and bantered with "GMA's" Josh Elliott.
"I've been working out. I've been trying to do the best I can to stay in shape. And these stress-fests, they help. But I need to catch my breath! Please talk," Carey said.

Mariah Carey continued with the interview as her handlers rushed over to fix the broken zipper.

hen as she made her way up a flight of stairs to sit on a platform to perform another song, she could clearly be heard muttering a profanity.
“Oh, s--t," she said, quickly adding, "You didn't hear that."

Media-savvy Angelina Jolie ducks gossip mags by carefully timing her mastectomy article

Media-savvy Angelina Jolie ducks gossip mags by carefully timing her mastectomy article

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie is the most savvy publicist in Hollywood.

The brave actress, who just revealed in a New York Times Op-Ed piece that she chose to undergo a preventive double mastectomy to lower her chances of breast cancer, planned her announcement meticulously.

Jolie, who has been beaten up by the weekly gossip magazines for years, released her story early Tuesday, causing In Touch, Life & Style, OK and Us Weekly to miss the biggest scoop since the “Girl Interrupted” Oscar winner stole Brad Pitt from Jennifer Aniston.

PHOTOS: ANGELINA JOLIE'S BEST MOMMY MOMENTS

“She knows the weeklies’ printing schedule,” one magazine insider tells Confidenti@l. “OK closes on a Thursday [the week before] so they had no chance. The others close on Monday night at midnight, so they were out.”

Our source explains that only People, the most powerful and respectable of the bunch, has the option to go back in on Tuesday morning to reprint the entire magazine — which is expensive, but worth it, when it is a story as big as Jolie’s.

After People spotted Jolie’s piece, the staff reworked the cover to feature the actress with the headline, “Inside Her Brave Choice.” Five pages of the glossy are dedicated to her story.

“People has been working with the same printing press forever and they never use the late option. They knew this was worth it,” says our source.

It is rare for the glossy to toss out a cover at the last minute. The most recent occasion was in April 2010, when Julia Roberts was bumped as People’s Most Beautiful cover girl for Sandra Bullock, who not only had announced filing for divorce from cheating hubby Jesse James, but said she had secretly adopted a baby boy.

In Jolie’s case, the mag had until 3 p.m. Tuesday to gather a story and bump the Ohio kidnapping victims as the lead story. The prior week, the cover featuring them sold over 1 million copies.

“She refuses to work with a publicist and knew if she broke it on a Monday, she’d be on the cover of the magazines she doesn’t like,” says our source.

“She’s not mad. She’s savvy. She’s winning the game here,” says the insider. “The New York Times also requested a full interview with her, but she wrote the Op-Ed so she’d have full control. Every word is her word and can’t be twisted or taken out of context. People has always been good to her.”

PITTSBURGH IS A CHLOE BLISSBURG

Chloe Sevigny fell in love with Pittsburgh while filming her new A&E series, “Those Who Kill.” “There are all these bridges and a beautiful river and the hills and there is all this beautiful architecture. It is a really exciting place,” she told us. “I went to some cool bars there. It is the least gentrified city I think I’ve visited in America for a long time. There is much to be discovered there.”

Speaking of bars, the actress, being photographed by the BLK DNM line’s creative director, Johan Lindeberg, at the launch of Absolut Elyx in the Meatpacking District, said her worst hangover happened after she mixed vodka with tequila.

“I had a really bad one in a hotel room in Manhattan many years ago,” she said. “I think I had alcohol poisoning. It was pretty torturous. I’d been at Mars bar the night before, so perhaps I picked up something else because that bar is pretty filthy.”

Kristen Stewart & Robert Pattinson: How Rupert Sanders Caused Breakup

Kristen Stewart

ugged a number of his belongings and dogs out of K-Stew’s house and took them back to his own. Oh no!

On May 19, Robert Pattinson, wearing backwards cap and driving a red pickup truck, was seen moving all of his things out of Kristen Stewart’s Los Feliz, California house.

Robert Pattinson Moves Stuff Out Of Kristen Stewart’s House

“He showed up early in the morning in a big red pickup truck and was in the house for maybe 30 minutes,” an eyewitness told Life & Style magazine. “When he came out, the back of the truck was loaded with stuff. Suitcases, a bike, trash bags full of his things.”
Shockingly, Rob was spotted taking the dogs he shares with Kristen, Bear and Bernie, with him as well, according to X17 Online!
Rob allegedly can’t get over the fact that Kristen cheated on him in 2012. They’ve reportedly parted ways for a bit and now, according to our sources, Rob and Kristen are allowing each other to date other people.

Robert Pattinson & Kristen Stewart Dating Other People

A friend of Kristen’s tells HollywoodLife.com exclusively, “They are basically allowed to date other people and Kristen is super sad over the whole thing. She has absolutely no desire to date anyone and the thought of Rob possibly seeing other people has made her sick to her stomach. She’s depressed and rightly so. Her good friends have been hanging out with her at her house giving her support. This is a tough time for both of them. But Kristen seems to be taking the split the hardest.”
For those who were hoping that Rob and Kristen’s split would just be a temporary break, these latest developments speak volumes. However, we’re still holding out hope though that this time apart will give them better perspective on the relationship and will strengthen things in the long run.

Wow my God! We quite tired of Lindsay Lohan , however still we must see us for what she's doing. As of this moment she plays in the fifth Scary Movie motion picture, and on the set, she has been nicknamed “klÃ¥fingret” – since she took dress for over 100 000 SEK!

“The apparel clung her dress clothes rod. Few excellent tops and shirts and different pieces of clothing vanished. I figure Lindsay thought she needed to take them as complimentary cleanser in inns,” states an insider from brottsplagsen. “The other actors knew about it, however the makers brought it with a squeeze of salt and declared it was the value you needed to pay to go with her.” Uh, what? Doubtlessly it gives her no right to take things, in particular when she at long last got a vocation on the g! Fy, Lindsay

Prince Charles and Camilla also joined the royals for the annual event.
