Carolina Herrera took fashion fans on an optical ride for the debut of her spring 2014 collection at Mercedes Benz fashion week in New York on Monday (September 9).
The New York based designer looked to her Venezuelan roots and the art world for motivation for the line.
"The Kinetic art that inspired me is based on two Venezuelan artists who are very famous artist in the Kinetic field, Jesus Soto and Carlos Cruz-Diez. But it's not just only the idea of using the fabrics or putting one on top of the other one that creates the Kinetic Art, it is also very virtual and multi dimensional. And it is very good for your eye," said Herrera.
Kinetic art plays on optical illusion. Typically, works seem to vibrate for viewers walking past.
Organza and silk overlays created illusions on skirts, dresses and even her signature trench gowns. Stripes, panels and jeweled embellishments helped mold the Kinetic art feel into fashion.
Herrera presented an array of hemlines, from floor length to bikini bottoms.
"The silhouettes are cut very simply but there are very feminine and very easy to wear and with a lot of movement. Which is what I wanted for this year," she told Reuters.
The 74-year-old's color palette ranged from ivory, brown and black with pops of shell pink and orange she called sienna clay.
Mercedes Benz fashion week is currently in its fifth day and will end on September 12.
